CONSTITUENCY QUESTION — Mr Kennedy to ask the Minister for Public Transport

My constituency question is for the Minister for Public Transport. As many in this place know, I am an avid user of public transport. My question to the minister is: what is the time line for the rollout of the new myki gates, particularly in the seat of Hawthorn? The next-generation myki reader gates scan cards instantly, minimising potential delays at the station gates, particularly during peak times. Camberwell station in my electorate has older myki gates, and I think installing new gates with quick touch-on readers would make a real difference for commuters like me, whether they be people heading into work in the morning, students or people heading to the shops.

Answer.

The Andrews Labor Government is rolling out new faster myki readers at the majority of stations across the network.

To date, over 688 new units already installed at railway stations.

The next generation myki readers scan cards instantly, minimising potential delays at the station gates, particularly during peak times. These fast myki readers are proven to reduce dwell times and passenger movements.

Myki readers are updated based on usage levels. Faster card readers were installed at Camberwell station on 2 August 2019. The myki gates at Camberwell were also upgraded late last month to include this new technology, and have been in service since 27 November 2019.
